Northwoods Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance Snowshoe Hike

The Northwoods Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance will host  a

guided snowshoe hike in the Underdown area of the Lincoln County Forest on Saturday,  January 28, 2017 starting at 10:00 A.M.   Meet at the  Underdown Recreation Parking Lot on Copper Lake Road.

Come and enjoy the wonderful landscape created by the Great Wisconsin Glacier about ten

thousand years ago.  A UW geology and geophysics professor described the Underdown as a

“world class hummocky feature” of glacial topography.  In simpler terms, the area has swamps,

lakes, bogs and hills abundantly.

The snowshoe trail layout and design has been done by chapter member, Chris Schotz. The trail

is well marked and packed.  Hikers can chose between distances of one to four hours depending 

on your ability, experience and endurance.  The trail is “moderately difficult”.  Bring your

snowshoes, drink and weather appropriate clothing.

Hot cider, hot chocolate, cookies and a blazing fire will await you after the hike.  There is no charge for this event.  Donations to the chapter will be accepted.

Fall Color Hike and Trail Grand Opening

Join the Northwoods Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance for a hike through autumn leaves on a newly constructed trail.  Explore the 2.5 mile Marsh Loop, or continue over the ice marginal ridge for a 5.1 mile journey to the brink of the Prairie Dells gorge.  A newly created map to 42 features on Lincoln County hiking trails will be available to guide you past the historic and natural features in your path.

Meet for a guided hike at 10AM on October 1st.  From Highway 17 find Heinemann Road just south of Bloomville and continue approximately 2.5 miles west to the Merrill Memorial Forest.  Others approaching from Merrill may take County K for 6 miles north to County R which winds east to the trailhead.

Bring a snack and water for the trail.  The hike is open to the public at no cost.  A free will donation for the local chapter is welcome.  For more information contact Chris Schotz at 715-351-0107.

This trail will also host the Wisconsin Endurance Mountain Bike Series Championship on October 8th.  This event is another trail fundraiser, and volunteers are always appreciated.

WILDFLOWER HIKE

The Northwoods Chapter, Ice Age Trail Alliance will be conducting their Spring Wildflower Hike Saturday May 24, 2014.  The adventure will be in the Camp 27 Segment of the Ice Age Trail . This is one of the wildest sections of the  the entire 1000 miles of the trail.  In addition to the usual spring flora, hikers may see evidence of bobcats, timber wolf, fisher, deer and bear.   

The total hike will be about three miles on woodland trails, and considered moderately easy.  The tread could be wet in a few spots.  Hikers need to dress for the weather as it is a rain or shine event.  Bring a lunch to eat on the trail.  This hike is open to the public and there is no cost. A free will donation for the local Chapter is welcome.

A car pool is available from Club 64 Parking Lot on Hwy 64 on the West side of Merrill at 9:30 A.M.    Hikers can choose to meet at the Hike start at 10 A.M.   Take Hwy 64 west of Merrill to Highway E.  Follow E to Conservation Avenue.  Follow the Ice Age Trail Event signs.

2014 Snowshoe Hike

Come on out to the Underdown main parking lot at 10AM on Saturday, February 8th  for guided hikes from 2 to 8 miles.  Hikers will climb the heights of the Ice Age Trail and have a chance to cross lakes and bogs that are only accessible in winter.  Refreshments and a warm fire afterwards.

Fall Color Hike

 NORTHWOODS CHAPTER ICE AGE TRAIL FALL COLOR HIKE

DATE: Saturday October 5, 2013  10 A.M.

 WHEN:  To car pool meet at 9 A.M.  (Club 64 parking lot) west of

                 Merrill

HIKE START  TIME:   10 A.M. 

DIRECTIONS TO HIKE SITE:  Take 64 west of Merrill to Highway M-continue west on M for 11 miles.  Turn right on Tower Road.   Go North 9 miles. (Follow Ice Age Trail Event Signs) 

The Timberland Wilderness Segment of the Ice Age Trail will be the  featured section for this year’s fall hike.  This segment is in the western most portion of the Ice Age Trail in Lincoln County, accessed only by Tower Road.  This “wilderness” is characterized by mature, mixed hardwood trees; maple, oaks and hickory.  There are several unusual glacial features traversed by the trail, one being the ice-walled-lake plain.  This will be a good chance to test your tree identification skills.

The trail is on firm, dry ground and should be considered only moderately difficult following rolling terrain. Total distance to be hiked is about 3 miles.

Bring a lunch to eat on the trail.

We will car pool from the parking lot near Club 64 (on Hwy 64) on the west end of Merrill on Saturday October 5^th at 9:00 A.M.

Annual Meeting

THRU_HIKING VERMONT'S LONG TRAIL

At the Annual Meeting of the Northwoods Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance,

 Join guest speaker, Teacher/ Naturalist of Trees For Tomorrow, Joe Panci of Eagle River, WI. as he tells the tales of his 2007 thru-hike of Vermont's Long Trail, a true mountain adventure.  A 300 mile journey along America's oldest long-distance trail.  This trail runs the length of Vermont (From Massachusetts to the Canadian border).This rugged  trail leads hikers along the backbone of the Green Mountains, sharing its first 100 miles with the Appalachian Trail.  Learn what it takes physically, mentally and logistically to do a thru-hike?

The public is invited.

  The presentation will follow a fairly brief Chapter business meeting.  Chapter volunteers will share their efforts and adventures on their segments of the trail during the past year.

Come see what the Ice Age Trail is all about.    

 The meeting will be on Tuesday April 9, 2013,at 6:30 pm in the Lincoln County Services Building, 801 North Sales Street, Merrill, WI.    .

2012 Snowshoe Hike

It is hard to imagine that the last Wisconsin Glacier molded much of the terrain or landscape of Lincoln County. As the glacier melted northward, hundreds of feet of boulders, sand and gravel were deposited forming the hummocky glacial features of the Underdown. Huge blocks of glacial ice were deposited and buried, later to melt forming the many kettle lakes. During the 10,000 years following the glacial “melt down” plants invaded the region. Bogs with their special plant flora are common place.

Tamarack and black spruce occupy the low lands while northern hardwoods have taken root on the ridges.

Once again, the Northwoods Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance will be offering the public a guided snowshoe hike in the Underdown area of the Lincoln County Forest on January 14, 2012 starting at 10:00 from the parking lot on Copper Lake Road. Come and enjoy the wonderful landscape created by the Great Wisconsin Glacier.

We will be hiking on the Camp 27 Segment in western Lincoln County. A carpool is available from the west side of Merrill at 9:30; otherwise, take 64 west of Merrill to Highway E.
